Value Addition Programme 2020-21

Title of VAP : Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing

Guest Faculty : Mr. Aanad Bhise

Date : 20/11/2020 to 23/11/2020

The University designed curriculum helps students learn the theoretical details of the syllabus, but it falls short in delivering quality practical knowledge. To rectify this shortcoming so as to further develop our students, Mechanical Department organized a 3-day Value Addition Program on ” Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing ” from 20/11/2020 to 23/11/2020 at Vishwaniketan iMEET. This Program was conducted by Mechatol Engineering Solutions, Pune.

Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) is a language of symbols and standards designed and used by engineers and manufacturers to describe a product and facilitate communication between entities working together to produce something. It is the overall perspective of what an engineering drawing is and why it is important.

The various topics covered during this program included: The Need for GD&T, the introductory concepts of GD&T, a comprehensive comparison of Traditional method of tolerancing vs. GD&T, a detailed look at Datum which is the most important concept in GD&T, and how they are created? How are they applied? And what do they mean on the drawing? Further a detailed look at Bonus tolerance and concept of virtual condition which lays a key role in mating parts was also covered.

Initially Mr. Aanad Bhise gave an hour long presentation about the current existing technologies in Engineering Field and the new rapid changes that are taking place every day in the Industry. He gave an overview of the complete program and discussed the kind of projects expected from the students at the end of the Value Addition Program. After which the training was formally started.

Several important points were covered during the session. These included:

Explanation of Symbols and their inspection methods

  1. Form
  2. Straightness
  3. Flatness
  4. Circularity and cylindricity
  5. Orientation
  6. Angularity
  7. Perpendicularity
  8. Parallelism
  9. Location
  10. Position
  11. Symmetry and Concentricity
  12. Runout
  13. Profile

At the end of the session, the students gained a general idea of how G&T is used to indicate various important concepts on the drawing sheet. Similarly they also understood the importance of these notations and were able to read the geometric drawings better.
